Quick Tips from a quality guide
Last week I was fishing the East Walker along the miracle mile just below Bridgeport reservoir and ran into an old friend of mine, Peter Santley. Last year, late summer, I was fishing one of my favorite spots on the Truckee and Peter was fishing just upstream and hooked a hog. He ran him down river towards me and I netted the fish and snapped a few photos. We met under the best circumstances, exchanged emails and went on our way. Last thursday when I showed up to the E. Walker he was there and gave me a few good tips. When fishing the top section, pick the fly that you want to use... then go a size smaller, maybe two. I was slingin my new favorite tan baetis in size 16 and landed one little brown, but I would have had a whole lot better of luck if I was fishing a size 20. If your heading out to the east walker these days bring a healthy supply of size 1 split shot, and a whole armada of tiny flies. Who knows maybe you could join the 20/20 club! As you work your way downriver past Murphy pond you can start fishing larger flies. Figured Id include a shot of my little brown i caught on that tan baetis I've been talking so much about.
