Stone Cold Steve Austin

There are only a few flies that are successful year round here on the Truckee.  One of these amazing go to flies is the Stone fly.  Between a range of different species, stones are on the menu for trout year round and you better believe fish love to munch these juicy insects.  Right now the banks of the Truckee are littered with stonefly casings and crawfish skeletons.  That means that all the crawfish in the river are soft and edible, and stones are all over the river floor.  Today I fished a stone below a fluorescent orange crawdaddy.  I didn't get any takers on the crawfish, but I hammered some trout on the stone.  A lot of people tell you what to use but don't offer any proof that it's actually working, so here is an 18" brown I caught on my stonefly pattern today, and a 25" bow I caught on the same pattern in February. To give you even more incentive to head down to the river, here is my stonefly pattern that I use year round.

P.S. I don't always tie in the legs, I have not noticed a major difference with or without
