High flow blues
This past week seems to have been the kick off for summer, and by that I mean warm temps (finally). Unfortunately that means all that snow we got this winter is going to start melting in those high elevations very quickly. Last week there were flood warnings issued on the west and east walker and the truckee was pumping over 2000 cfs at boca and about 1000 cfs in truckee. For those of you who don't happen to study hydrology, the truckee normally flows at about 300 cfs above Boca and about 400 below Boca, so the river is way way up. The fish are still in there and they are getting fat with all the nutrients in these high waters. High flows allows for a break from the late spring baetis hatch and are a good time to use big streamers and fish the seams of slow water. One thing to keep in mind is that your favorite summer spot to fish probably wont be fishable. High water changes the river and good holes may not be in the usual spots. Pack up a lunch, lots of water, and plan to hike the river at least a mile. Whenever you spot a bend or a log or a pile of rocks that slows the river along the shore without causing a huge eddy, fish the slower side of the seam with a peacock bugger and your favorite little fly as a dropper. I personally like to go with a hares ear grub or a tan baetis. If you dont get out in these high flows then I dont blame you, work, save money, tie flies, and get ready for the flows to come because when they do it is going to be amazing. If you do get out be damn careful to not fall in, basically dont try and cross unless you have a great shallow spot.
