l'll Take What I Can Get
Flows above Boca are looking GOOD! The water is very wade-able, crystal clear, and there are bugs everywhere. The fishin is starting to feel a little more like summer every day. Caddis are starting to hatch, there are golden stones on the surface, and the fish are biting. The only reason I say starting to feel like sumer and not, "is summer" is because the water temperature is still pretty cool which is allowing the fish stay in slower water. Im not talking the kind of slow flow that hold fish during the run off, but the kind of slow at the end of riffle or seam, where the water is still moving but there is no white water and your drift can be in the water for more than a few seconds. Later on in the summer look for the fish to move into the pocket water, but for now keep fishing those deeper, somewhat slower areas. If you make it out to the river in the next few days be sure to bring cream caddis size 12 and brown caddis size 14, and very light golden stonefly size 12. It would also be a good idea to bring up some size 16 yellow and tan may flies. I caught this guy on a size 14 brown caddis pupa that looks more like a ball of brown dubbing than anything else. I pulled two fish out of this whole and hooked a ton more, for some reason I had a hell of a time keeping fish on. My indicator was dropping, then I'd set the hook, feel a few throbs, then nothing. I was getting really frustrated because I lost a fish that was a nice bit bigger than the one in the photo. But hey, a 18" bow? I'll take what I can get.
