Desperate in the desert
I had a pretty interesting morning on the Truckee in Nevada today. The first winter storm rolled through the area the beginning of this week and I was hoping the cold would get the streamer bite going. My hopes were answered as I had 4 fish over 20" try to eat my articulated bugger off the surface, which is absolutely crazy because I have never gotten big fish like that to chase something all the way up to the surface. But as it seems to always go, I have nothing to show for it. The thoughts of those fish lingered all day and I couldn't resist an afternoon set when I was done with my work. I hoped in my swift and drove out into the desert to try my luck. This time I threw on the WTW fly below my articulated bugger and pulled in one pretty rainbow. I can't wait for the temps to drop a little more and for those big browns to start moving around for the spawn. Get some big ugly black streamers, sink tip line, and find a deep spot with lots of cross currents and submerged rocks. Mix it up between dead drifts with a tiny bit of slack in the line and fast action retrieve strait downstream. You might get lucky enough to hook up with an infamous Truckee Toad. Snapped a few shots for the blog , one of my photos was way over exposed so I tried to get artsy with it.
