A Little Trip

I planned kind of a last minute trip to go visit my buddy Ross in Salt Lake for a little hunting and fishing.  When I make the trip over to SLC I always have an agenda of rivers that I have to fish, gotta start out close to town with the middle provo, then branch out from there heading to tail-waters out of the reservoir and such.  I tell you what, you can be very confident in your fishing ability, but don't underestimate the power of local knowledge.  One of the rivers we fished I landed a nice brown first cast, the thing slammed a midge behind a streamer when I was swinging it through a pool.  With that bit of luck we thought we were gonna have a stellar day... we were wrong.  The rest of the day I had a few bumps but spent most of the day playing landscaper to the various forms of flora in the river.  This river had a LOT of down logs, undercut banks, big root balls, and grass growing all through it.  This makes close to some of the best trout habitat possible but damn hard fishing, especially when you aren't familiar with the runs and where the snags are hiding.  The gnarly undercuts and down trees were holding a lot of nice fish, they were  just damn hard to get to em out of those hiding spots.  Walking back to the car we spent the whole time making excuses for why the bite wasn't good, only to get back and run into another group of locals who caught.  They were a real friendly bunch who offered advice, flies, and showed us pics from the day and from the past.  All their pics were of big, nasty, healthy, mature browns in the 22"+ range (up to 27"!!!!!).  All from a river that is about 1/2 the size of the Truckee, like I said, damn good habitat.  Despite the slowness, we still managed to bend the rods a bit, not just on snags either.  I wanted to say thanks to my buddy Ross for being a great host and putting up with my fishing addiction.
