The Truckee, so hot right now
The aggressive strikes and hard fighting fish have continued throughout this whole week and will hopefully stay hot for another few days. As many of you know, everyday spent on the water is a day of learning, for example I got a few lessons from a few big fish about what happens when you put too much pressure on them. I lost 3 fish that were all a fair amount bigger than this fish in the photo, I had one to my feet that looked a little over two feet, but I tried to net him like an asshole and then lost him, which I probably deserved for trying to man handle a big fish. Since I am fortunate enough to spend so much time on the water, I figured I would start a tips and tricks category. Today, the tip is about how to properly set a hook so you wont lose a fish during the fight. When a fish takes, don't pull up like we have all been taught to do, instead set the hook directly down river. When a fish takes, I like to try to pull the rod tip all the way to the downstream shore behind me, pointing at the bank. If you set like this it will pull the hook into the bony jaw instead of the fleshy lips. This is key for landing big fish on small flies, like the midges that have been working well this week.
