Bassin', Carolina style
The bass season is just around the corner!!! The water temps are starting to warm up enough to have most of the bigger fish roaming around and some of the smaller fish waking up and getting hungry. Small ponds warm up sooner so most of the active fish I have found have been in smaller water, compare this to a larger lake near my house, which is big enough to water ski on and has yet to start fishing well. Bassin and lake fishing is one hell of a good way to shake the high flow blues. If you get a chance to fish a pond thats got bass, stick with traditional knowledge. Use sub surface streamers with lots of color and accessories, i.e. rubber legs, articulated, the uglier the better, fish near structure or shade and use slow to medium slow action until the water temps rise even more. I like to use floating line with a lightly weighted fly, let it sink and give it action with short strips (2-4") every two or three seconds. It is always tempting to fish poppers but bass dont like to come up to the surface until later on in the season. Plenty of public ponds throughout Reno hold bass, get out and find yourself one!! Old southwest reno is always a good place to start. Thanks to Dave (bottom photo) for showing me this honey hole.
