One of my goals of doing this blog is to help people get into fish and enjoy fly fishing. I can't, in good conscious, give away all my secrets because I never know when the zealous bait chukar may wander across my site and learn of secret spots, but I am happy to give flies, techniques, some locations, and tips to anyone who is interested. That being said I had a request for my BWO pattern so I figured I would post a picture.
Heres the recipe:
6/0 olive unithread
orvis 62 KC sz 14 hook
orvis 7/16" gray bead
olive pheasant tail
silver wire (small)
light olive spectral blend dubbing
This fly takes me about 8 minutes to tie once I get the material out. When using the pheasant tail, leave enough extra for the legs wrapping the body. Also, it is better to use fewer barbules (6 or so) from the pheasant tail. This makes the body thinner which gives better results.
I use this same pattern for: March brown, PMD, and any other mayfly on the water. Just change up the color of p.t., dubbing, and bead. This fly in brown works just about year round.
