A little rusty
Just about 5 weeks before the end of every semester I realize, "holy crap!, I have way to much stuff to do and I am way behind!" This realization came two weeks ago, and since then I have not been to the river much less had a chance to fish. Things haven't slowed down a bit, and I don't expect them to until June, but I managed to sneak a few hours in on the river yesterday. Lets just say two weeks of no casting or wading has a serious effect on stealthiness. I spent the majority of the day spooking pre-spawn fish out of skinny water downstream of their spawning ground. This was disappointing especially when one pocket I busted had close to 15 fish staked up in it, but despite my carelessness, I managed to hook up with a four. The fish were feisty to say the least and it was one of the most fun experiences I have had on the truckee. The second I set every hook, the water exploded at my feet. One fish I hooked took off strait upstream the instant I set the hook, sending my reel into a new octave before he even hit the smooth water of the spawning ground. As this fish tore up the smooth water, he made a massive wake that rippled through the entire river, all while my line was right behind him, bouncing and swaying like a chairlift in the wind. One of the things that I wish I would have filmed, so freaking cool. Unfortunately he got to the next run and wrapped me around a rock, keep in mind this was about 60 yards upriver from where I hooked him. Basically that was the story of the day; hook a monster, get totally schooled... So much fun. I did manage to land a smaller fish out of some deeper water tho, all the fish were taking a sz 14 bwo. I tie these things based on my buddy Dave's pattern with slight variation. I do basically a pheasant tail using olive dyed tail, silver wire, gray bead, and olive dubbing thorax all on a curved scud hook. Seemed to work well yesterday.
